The process of service-learning entails partnering with a community entity and developing a project that benefits both the student who is engaging in service learning and the recipient.

For my Native American Studies class, I worked on a semester-long service learning project focused on the history of Native American boarding schools with four classmates. Our literary magazine project involved partnering with Rehoboth Christian School in Rehoboth, New Mexico. We interviewed Rehoboth’s Director of Community Life, Verlena Livingston, and Superintendent Bob Ippel. We used the interviews and Rehoboth’s school resources to develop a magazine examining how Rehoboth’s past shapes its present.

This project allowed me to gain more experience with community outreach and bringing awareness to community issues. During the process, I strengthened my graphic design, writing, and interviewing skills.

Roots of Resilience

I worked on a final project for my Nature/Environment/Science writing class that allowed me to showcase my creative writing skills. After reading Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass eco memoir, I was inspired to create a similar project.

Growing up, I used personal experiences of visiting national parks to create a literary magazine on the significance of National Parks as Indigenous homelands across multiple generations.  This project allowed me to strengthen my graphic design and personal narrative skills.
